Introducing MDA: Real Preflop Ranges from 300M+ Hands

We’ve just released a new feature in FreeBetRange — MDA. In this section, you can explore real preflop ranges of different opponent archetypes, built from 300M+ real cash-game hands. This is a major step beyond standard GTO tools — you can now explore how players actually play in real games.

What is MDA?

MDA (Mass Data Analysis) in poker is used to study opponent tendencies using large datasets. You usually don’t have enough hands on a single player. So instead, we take millions of hand histories, group players into different archetypes, and analyze how these groups play. This allows us to understand real tendencies on a large scale.

How it works in FreeBetRange

Inside FreeBetRange, we used 300M+ real cash-game hands and applied statistical and mathematical models to reconstruct real preflop ranges.

We built strategies for three key player archetypes:

  • Regs
  • Fish (VPIP 35–50)
  • Fish (VPIP 50+)

You can also filter by:

  • Room type
  • Game type
  • Stakes
  • Table size

This allows you to match MDA data to your exact games and see how your opponents really play.

Full preflop strategy, spot by spot

For each player type, you can navigate the full preflop decision tree. In every spot, you see the real range that this type of opponent plays on average. So when you’re at the table against a player with limited data, you can map them to a general type (reg or fish) and already have a good idea of their range in that spot.

You can also export ranges in one click and use them in a solver to build optimal counter-strategies against real opponent tendencies. In future updates, this workflow will be available directly inside FreeBetRange.

Why this matters

MDA is a step beyond GTO. GTO strategy gives you a theoretical baseline — which is a great start, but money in poker comes from exploiting mistakes. To do that, you need to understand how people actually play — and where they deviate from optimal strategy. MDA shows you exactly that: real ranges in real situations.

Combine GTO and MDA in your study

Inside FreeBetRange, you can study both:

  • GTO ranges — the optimal strategy
  • MDA ranges — real opponent behavior

If you study both, you become a much stronger player. You’ll understand the theoretical foundation and know how to play against unknown opponents, while also seeing real population tendencies and how players actually deviate from GTO.

Try MDA

In the free version, you can explore LJ Open Raise ranges across all filters to preview the feature. Full access to MDA is available in the Elite plan.
